Background

Commissioner Jeff Castner took an early retirement from the Los Angeles Superior Court in 2002 to devote his full attention to serving as a mediator, arbitrator and discovery referee. Using his broad judicial experience and expertise as a civil trial lawyer representing both plaintiffs and defendants, Commissioner Castner is known for his ability to resolve difficult cases. His practice areas include personal injury, maritime, real estate, business and contract disputes, professional liability, employment and environmental law matters.

Commissioner Castner’s friendly, low-key approach to mediation puts the parties and
lawyers at ease allowing them to focus their energies on the settlement process in a more
cooperative and safe environment. His strong work ethic means that he will not give up on
a case until all potential avenues of agreement have been explored.

As an arbitrator, Commissioner Castner carefully reviews submitted materials, gives
witnesses and counsel his full attention and renders timely, fair and well-reasoned
decisions.

Commissioner Castner has spent nearly four decades in the California legal community. He
served on the superior court in the Long Beach branch from 1991 to 2002; was a trial
lawyer and principal of a five lawyer boutique firm from 1981 to 1991 and also served as a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles County from 1978 to 1981. He graduated from Western State University College of Law in 1978. Prior to his service as an attorney, Commissioner Castner was a district attorney investigator and deputy marshal for Los Angeles County. His military awards include the Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
