Mike Nauyokas passed away on September 5, 2011.
In the last 20 years, Michael F. Nauyokas successfully mediated over 3500 compensated employment, labor, multiparty, personal injury, business contract, real estate, tort, insurance, bad faith, Jones Act, longshore, maritime, commercial, products liability, construction, professional malpractice, bankruptcy, toxic torts, workers’ compensation, securities, condominium, community association, qui tam, class actions, financial and other disputes and has been selected as an arbitrator in over 1300 more. Over 99.9% of the cases he mediated were settled in one day or less. To date, all but two were subsequently resolved. He had a boutique law practice specializing in mediation, arbitration and employment and labor law. Mr. Nauyokas held an “AV” rating (the highest possible) under the Martindale-Hubbell Rating System. He was listed in The Bar Registry of Pre-eminent Lawyers, in The Best Lawyers Consumer Guide, The Best Lawyers in America, and Corporate Counsel Annual Guide to Labor & Employment Law’s Top Lawyers. He was a member of the Mediation Committee for the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii. He has been featured in Honolulu Magazine’s Best Lawyers in Hawaii. Mr. Nauyokas was also listed on over 600 permanent panels. He has been a member of the United States District Court Magistrate Selection Commission for the District of Hawaii and serves on the Executive Board of the Industrial Relations Research Association and the Bar’s Committee on Continuing Legal Education. Recently, Mr. Nauyokas was nominated to be the President of the over 7000 member Hawaii State Bar Association.
Mr. Nauyokas was also an adjunct professor and frequent lecturer on numerous topics in the mediation, ne;tiation, arbitration, employment and labor law areas. Since 1989, Mr. Nauyokas has taught numerous courses in Mediation, Ne;tiation and Employment & Labor Law at the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific University. He has served as a panelist on the public television series, You and the Law in Hawaii. Among the numerous organizations he has served as lecturer are: the U.S. Department of Labor, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), the Society for Professionals in Dispute Resolution (now ACR), National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA), the American Arbitration Association (AAA), the Society for Human Resource Management and the Hawaii Employers Council.
In 2011, Mr. Nauyakos was inducted into the College as a Distinguished Fellow.
